It’s that time of year when football season is in full swing. As much as we all love the game itself, the pre-game tailgate party is at the top of the list for many. What better way to get into the spirit? Here are 8 essential items to have on hand for a successful tailgate party.
1. The Right Vehicle
As the name of this activity implies, a vehicle with a rear tailgate or cargo space with a lift gate. The two best vehicles for this scenario are an SUV or a pickup truck. It’s pretty hard to set up a car trunk for tailgating. An SUV has a hatch that can provide protection from the sun. A truck offers an extra horizontal surface for food prep and serving when the gate is open.
2. Canopy
Fall and early winter weather is unpredictable. It might be warm and sunny or rainy and cold. A protective canopy will keep the food safe from the elements. There are canopies that attach to lift gates and there are ones that can sit on a truck bed or on the ground.
3. Collapsable Seating
One of the best inventions for beach days and tailgate parties is the lightweight collapsable chairs that fit inside waterproof bags. These are comfortable and easy to store and transport.
4. Coolers and Ice Packs
Perishables need to remain at the correct temperature for safety. You can choose solid coolers or opt for the collapsable ones that are super easy to store when not in use. Keep some ice packs in your freezer so they are ready for game day.
5. Portable Grill or Gas Camp Stove
There are hard-core pitmasters who haul a smoker to the stadium lot the night before and start smoking ribs and briskets hours ahead of time. Most of us will do fine with a camp stove or a grill to cook or simply reheat prepared food.
6. Adult Beverages and Cigars
Being outdoors allows you to enjoy the game with some cold brews and good cigars. You will probably get the side-eye if you light up a cigar in your den while watching the game. That isn’t the case when you are tailgating. So go for it with quality tobacco products.
7. Disposable Plates, Cups, Utensils, and Paper Towels
Make clean-up easy by bringing disposable dinnerware, utensils, and a couple of rolls of paper towels. You can find biodegradable plates and utensils in most big grocery stores these days. That is a wonderful option for the eco-conscious tailgater. Not many people want to use real dishes and utensils that have to be washed once you get home after a long day of fun.
8. Trash Bags
The saying goes, “If you brought it in, take it out.” You never want to leave a mess behind. Be courteous and take your garbage and recycling and dispose of it responsibly. Plastic trash bags are excellent items to take with you. Use portable stands or simply tape them to your tailgate and label some for trash and some for recycling.
