CYMC 2025: Southern California Youth Music Hall Shines, Gathering Elites on the International Stage

Los Angeles, Summer 2025 — On the fertile land of Southern California, which has nurtured countless artistic dreams, a highly anticipated musical celebration was unveiled this summer. The California Youth Music Competition (CYMC) took place at the historic Pomona College, bringing together more than 130 talented young musicians and nearly 300 audience members to witness an artistic festival destined to leave its mark on Southern California’s cultural history.

Artistic Director/ Judge Peiwen Su remarked:
“Large-scale cultural events like this truly instill confidence and inspiration in children. We are committed to building a shining stage for young musicians in California. The level of this year’s competition is exhilarating—seeing so many talented children, their hard work deserves the highest recognition. With the mayor’s support, participation from international professors, and the presence of renowned Los Angeles music educators, CYMC now carries an even more global perspective. Every child who steps on stage is extraordinary, and every performance is a precious and unforgettable chapter of their lives.”

As one of the most vibrant and influential youth music competitions in Southern California, CYMC has always adhered to its mission: “building dreams for children and establishing a foundation for the arts.” It provides a professional, rigorous, and honorable platform for young musicians with passion and talent.

This year’s competition included two major categories: violin and piano. The jury and production team were composed of winners of international music competitions, professors from world-class conservatories, and artists with global stage experience—ensuring that each participant’s performance was tested against the highest standards.

Founder Ellie Welker shared:
“Our community needs music and art more than ever. I see young people eager to share their talents—their skills, passion, and spirit can truly inspire the world. I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to host the California Youth Music Competition. This event showcases the remarkable dedication and artistry of young musicians, and it motivates me to continue creating meaningful stages for the next generation. I also look forward to continuing this journey and hope to inspire more like-minded individuals to create opportunities for young artists.”

A highlight of CYMC 2025 was its official endorsement by the City of Claremont. Winners not only received a certificate of recognition and the exclusive CYMC trophy, but were also personally awarded by Mayor Corey Calaycay.

This was more than recognition of the children’s hard work—it symbolized the government’s high regard for the next generation of artistic talent. Such a scene, where a mayor personally presents honors in music education, is rare in Southern California’s history, making the ceremony solemn and unforgettable.

The competition was held at Lyman Recital Hall, renowned for its elegant classical ambiance and impeccable acoustics. Equipped with a Steinway concert grand piano and a magnificent pipe organ, the venue provided every participant with the most professional music stage. For many young musicians, performing here was not only a dream-come-true honor but also a precious milestone in their artistic journey.

First Prize Leads Directly to the International Stage

Even more exciting, CYMC 2025 was linked to the global stage. First-prize winners earned the distinguished honor of advancing directly to the Ascend.CYMC International Online Music Competition finals.

This meant that young musicians from Southern California would now stand before the world’s most prestigious jury panels. Judges included members from the ARD International Music Competition Munich, the Chopin International Piano Competition, as well as professors from the Colburn SchoolLeipzig University of Music, and the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre.

For young artists, performing before such an international jury was not only a rare trial but also an incomparable honor.

The competition was divided into multiple age and instrument categories, with especially strong participation in piano and violin. Though rigorous and competitive, the event radiated a sincere spirit of musical exchange.

In the end, four winners from each group received their awards at the 5:00 p.m. ceremony, personally presented by the mayor. The applause and cheers pushed the atmosphere to its peak.

Through collaborations with local businesses, CYMC transformed the event into more than just a competition—it became a cultural celebration blending artistry, community, and educational value.

After the award ceremony, Founder Ellie Welker spoke with deep emotion:
“That day, many young musicians’ performances moved me profoundly. I believe that in the days ahead, the California Youth Music Competition will continue to attract outstanding talents. Their artistry will inspire one another as they collectively pursue higher achievements in the arts.”

Artistic Director/Judge Peiwen Su added:
“When so many talented individuals gather together, CYMC makes these brilliant highlights in their lives last and flourish.”

This belief and persistence embody the very core of CYMC’s mission—to use music as a bridge, enabling young artists to shine and step together toward a broader international stage.
