The highly anticipated return of Wicked to Brazil is not just another revival—it’s a reinvention. With a fresh creative vision, new sets, costumes, and dazzling illusions, audiences are in for an unprecedented theatrical experience. At the helm of this production is a director whose journey has come full circle—returning home to Brazil after more than a decade away to lead one of the most beloved musicals of all time.
“Having left Brazil over 13 years ago, it has certainly come to a full-circle moment,” Ronny Dutra shared. “The kid that left had no clue he’d be back directing such an iconic show. It’s just wonderful to be able to share all my experience in NYC with the incredibly talented group of Brazilian artists. They’ve been super welcoming and very open to my visions and inspirations.”
This production marks the third time Brazilian audiences will witness Wicked, and Dutra and his team are taking bold steps to ensure it feels entirely new.
“Since it’s the third time Brazilian audiences will see the show, we decided to take a lot of risks and give them a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience like never seen before,” he explained. “Lots of magic. Illusions. Flights. All new sets and costumes. A totally reimagined Wicked. The audience deserves it. The show deserves it. Brazilians are very passionate about Wicked, and it’s only fair to swing as big as we can in the hopes for a home run! (Pardon the baseball reference lol).”
The director’s passion for storytelling and collaboration is evident in the way he approaches the production process. “The idea was to create a world in which every single department of the creative team has a say, and so far, we’re all part of the same world. It’s been exhilarating.”
As opening night approaches, the creative energy behind the scenes is palpable. While focused on the immediate demands of choreography and production, Dutra is also looking ahead.
“Well, I’m finishing the choreography of Dancing Through Life tomorrow,” he joked. “But kidding aside, I’m very excited to have my Brazilian directorial debut with Wicked. The team, the production, the actors, the fanbase—every single element is so special, and I hope to be able to touch people’s lives with all the work we’re doing.”
Returning to Brazil to direct such a landmark show has been a humbling experience. “I feel so welcomed by the industry, and I feel like they’re all eager to hear what I have to say. It’s really humbling and incredibly inspiring. The hope is that every single person in the 1,600-seat theater is somewhat moved by it, and I can continue to create and tell stories many more times in Brazil and NYC.”
And for those following his work, there’s even more to look forward to beyond Wicked. “Speaking of NYC, this coming fall I’m developing False Steps – A Ballroom Dance Comedy in NYC. So stay tuned!”
